Working Group 4 of RTCA SC-186 was realigned into two groups with two different tasks in November, 2004.  WG-4A supported the development of the ASA MASPS document.  WG-4B supports the development of the ASAS MOPS document.  Working Group 4 is co-chaired by Jonathan Hammer, of The MITRE Corporation/CAASD and Steve Koczo, of Rockwell Collins.  For questions or information about WG4 activities, please contact Jonathan at <jhammer@mitre.org>.

Working Group 4A is responsible for the development of requirements of end-to-end systems that can support and perform aircraft-based surveillance applications enabled by ADS-B.  This work includes safety and performance analyses to determine the requirements for safe and efficacious use of these applications.  WG-4A completed the initial version of the Aircraft Surveillance Applications (ASA) MASPS in December, 2003 which was published as RTCA DO-289.

An international harmonization effort is underway for some ASA application descriptions and requirements currently included in the ASA MASPS.  This work is being done through the RTCA and Eurocae Requirements Focus Group (RFG).  WG-4 members are supporting this effort, which is expected to result in a modified, jointly published ASA MASPS.  WG-4A will be modified at this time.  For more information on the RFG and its activities visit the RFG page on this web site.

Working Group 4B of RTCA SC-186 is responsible for requirements development for the avionics equipment necessary to support ASA applications as defined in the ASA MASPS (RTCA/DO-289).

Working Group 4B is co-chaired by Jonathan Hammer, of The MITRE Corporation/CAASD and Sethu Rathinam, of Rockwell Collins.  For questions or information about WG-4 activities, please contact Jonathan at <jhammer@mitre.org>.

Currently, WG-4B is developing requirements for the Airborne Separation Assurance Systems (ASAS) Minimum Operational Performance Specifications (MOPS).  WG-4B sub-groups are developing requirements for the three major sub-systems of ASAS.  The Surveillance Transmit Processing (STP) sub-group developed and published requirements for the STP, which processes own-ship data as necessary prior to transmitting it within ADS-B broadcasts.  The Airborne Surveillance and Separation Assurance Processing (ASSAP) sub-group is currently developing requirements for ASSAP, which will process received surveillance data and other information as necessary to perform ASA applications.  The Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) subgroup is currently defining requirements for the CDTI, which serves as the flight crew interface for all ASA applications and equipment.

These three ASAS sub-systems will define the specifications for the aircraft-based equipment required to support the ADS-B applications.  The ASAS MOPS will be a lower level document of the Minimum Aviation System Performance Standards (MASPS) for Airborne Surveillance Applications (ASA), which was completed by Working Groups 1 and 4(A) in late 2003.  The ASAS MOPS will specifically support those applications included in the ASA MASPS.

The WG-4B sub-groups generally meet concurrently and share some joint sessions.  As such, the meeting minutes and schedules are intermingled, and can be found above.
