RTCA SC-186 Working Group #1: Operations and Implementations

This page has been designed to support Working Group 1 of RTCA Special Committee 186 (SC-186).

Working Group 1 is co-chaired by Randall Bone, from MITRE/CAASD and Jim Walton, of UPS.  For questions or information about WG-1 activities, please contact Randy at bone@mitre.org.

Working Group 1 of RTCA SC-186 is responsible for operational issues in the development and implementation of ADS-B enabled aircraft-based applications.  This work includes developing operational concepts for new applications and assisting in standards development relating to the operational use of ADS-B equipment and applications.  Working Group 1 also works toward implementation of these applications through consideration and analysis of the necessary operational factors.

Working Group 1 serves as a forum for the consideration and initial development of new ADS-B ground and air-based surveillance applications enabled by ADS-B.  WG-1 solicits application inputs from within and outside of RTCA SC-186 and the ADS-B community.  Upon receiving application inputs, WG-1 reviews and considers the application for further development.  Considerations will include maturity of concept, potential time frame in which the application might become operational, number of stakeholders, and compatibility with ADS-B implementation planning.  The Working Group will develop and publish procedures for prioritizing applications.

An international harmonization effort is underway for some ASA application descriptions and requirements currently included in the ASA MASPS.  This work is being performed through the RTCA and Eurocae Requirements Focus Group (RFG).  WG-1 members are supporting this effort, which is expected to result in a modified, joint ASA MASPS.  For more information on the RFG and its activities visit the RFG page on this web site.

WG-1 also has an active Subgroup that is developing an Application Description (AD) / Operational Service and Environment Description (OSED) for Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness (ATSA) Enhanced Traffic Situational Awareness on the airport surface (SURF) with Alerting (ATSA-SURFACE with ALERT).
