The Research and Technology Division works in close partnership with the FAA project management offices and operating services, the military, industry, academia, foreign aviation authorities, and standards setting organizations such as RTCA and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).  Currently, the division's efforts are primarily focused on supporting GPS Augmentation systems (LAAS and WAAS) and other navigational aides, TCAS, Safe Flight - 21 initiatives such as the Requirements Focus Group (RFG), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) applications, and ADS-B Program Office initiatives such as the definition and testing of ADS-B Surveillance and Broadcast Services Ground Stations.

Surveillance Team

The primary mission of the Surveillance Team at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center is to provide engineering and test & evaluation support to the ADS-B Program Office at FAA Headquarters in Washington DC.  Current activities include engineering and testing support of the following programs:
  • Automatic Dependent Surveillance-B (ADS-B) Link Testing and Analysis (UAT/1090ES)
  • Capstone Communications and Control System (CCCS)
  • Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B)
  • Surveillance and Broadcast Services Ground Station, and Broadcast Services Control Facility
  • ATCRBS & Mode S Transponder MOPS updates

Airborne Technology Team

The Airborne Technology Team supports the development of ADS-B system standards and requirements and the applications enabled by this new surveillance technology.  For a more detailed description of ADS-B, its enabling technology, and potential applications of this new surveillance source, visit the ADS-B Web Page.  Like the Surveillance Team, the Airborne Technology Team also supports various SF-21 and ADS-B Program Office initiatives enabled by ADS-B, including Cockpit Display and Traffic Information (CDTI) technology and applications.   Airborne Technology Team personnel also perform analysis of TCAS (also called ACAS in much of the world) performance from simulation modeling and commercial and test flight data and support FAA certification efforts of TCAS I and TCAS II systems.  For a more detailed description of TCAS, visit the TCAS Web Page.
