ADS-B Link Decision Workshops

Meeting 1: June 6, 2001

Meeting 2: June 25 – 26, 2001

Meeting 3: October 19, 2001

 The FAA and Industry held public meetings on 6 June 2001, 25 - 26 June 2001, and 19 October 2001 to:

1.   Share information concerning the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) as a surveillance technology;

2.  Address the technical, manufacturing, and implementation aspects and issues of ADS-B; and

3.  Gain better insight into avionics implementation costs and feasibility associated with ADS-B.

Meeting 1: June 6, 2001

The purpose of the June 6, 2001 meeting was to:

  1. Review how the FAA sees the use of ADS-B as a surveillance technology;
  2. Review the progress made by the FAA defining ADS-B configurations and applications;
  3. Review the technical evaluations, simulations and benefits analysis recently completed; and
  4. Review ongoing related work by the FAA

 The expected outcome of the June 6, 2001 meeting was to give avionics and aircraft manufacturers and airspace users enough information for the follow-up meeting on June 25-26, 2001 where participants could help the FAA gain better insight into avionics implementation costs and feasibility.

Meeting 2: June 25 - 26, 2001

The purpose of the June 25 – 26, 2001 meeting was to discuss with avionics and aircraft manufacturers the issues and costs associated with implementing ADS-B alternatives and configurations.  The FAA has the ground-based cost information, but needs the avionics implementation cost information to make the ADS-B link decision which was initially planned for September 2001.

Meeting 3: October 19, 2001

The purpose of the October 19, 2001 meeting was to: (1) review the most recent results of the evaluations of the alternative ADS-B link technologies and architectures versus the required functional, performance and operational capabilities; (2) review the results of the economic assessments of the core set of alternate ADS-B link architecture scenarios.  The meeting objective was to provide the aviation industry better insight into the factors that are expected to be the basis for the future FAA decision on the ADS-B link architecture.
